These hour-long consultations offer you the opportunity to have a discussion with a midwife about the choices for care that can arise before, during and after birth. They will help you to develop your knowledge and understanding of routine choices and interventions such as:

• Place of birth

• Positions for labour and birth

• Pushing in labour

• Internal examinations

• Artificial rupture of membranes

This will enable you to create a plan for your birth which will help you to make informed decisions when you are in labour. Knowing about the various interventions that could be offered during your birth, and their pros and cons, means that you will be able to quickly make a decision about whether to accept or decline them when you’re in labour, which is a time when you need to be able to concentrate on birthing your baby and not being disturbed by having to think about new information.
